Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) training can play a key role in supporting youth mental health through helping to build supportive communities where young people feel heard, understood and empowered to manage their mental health challenges.
This course is aimed at adults who work or regularly interact with young people, including teachers, parents and youth workers, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to provide effective support for young people in difficulty, thereby becoming key allies in safeguarding youth well-being.
A Youth Mental Health First Aider can respond in a crisis or support someone in difficulty but would not be expected to resolve, diagnose, prescribe or have an ‘expert’ opinion on the mental health of the young person.
Course highlights:
- Understand adolescent development and mental health difficulties
- Recognise the signs of mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, self-injury, eating disorders, psychosis
- Learn how to respond effectively and with confidence when a young person is struggling, ensuring they signpost them to the right support at the right time.
- How to reduce stigma and promote open conversations about mental health, fostering a culture where young people feel safe to seek help.
- Learn how to access early intervention and professional support, improving long-term mental health outcomes for young individuals.
