Promoting Wellbeing in the Workplace

Coatech is a Rhyl-based company that specialises in the specification and installation of high-quality resin surfacing systems. Serving industrial, commercial, and domestic clients across the UK, the business operates with a close-knit team of 6–8 staff members, depending on the project.

The Wellbeing Challenge

Coatech recognised the importance of creating a supportive work environment to reduce stress, promote mental health, and boost team morale. With a small team, the directors understood that even small changes could have a big impact on wellbeing and overall performance.

What We Did

Coatech’s directors sought support from RCS and attended several training sessions, including Menopause Awareness, Wellbeing Champions, and Managing Teams Through Change. These sessions provided tools to embed wellbeing across the business.

Following the training, Coatech introduced a series of practical changes to support their team. Two Wellbeing Champions were appointed to offer guidance and promote a culture of openness around mental health. The company also introduced a free flu vaccine scheme and launched a winter health campaign, which included wellness tips and winter hats to keep morale high.

To encourage physical activity, a Cycle-to-Work scheme was set up, with staff already taking part. Coatech also made referrals to RCS’s In-Work Support service to help staff access tailored wellbeing support. In addition, one-to-one meetings and appraisals were made more regular and are now held in a refreshed staffroom to encourage more open, supportive conversations.

The Impact

These initiatives have led to improved attendance, greater staff engagement, and a more open and supportive culture. Employees feel better supported, and there’s growing interest in wellbeing across the team.

The support from RCS helped us put real structure around our wellbeing efforts. It’s made a noticeable difference in how our team feels and performs,” said Emma Shufflebottom, Director and Co-owner of Coatech.

Looking ahead, the company plans to issue a staff wellbeing survey, integrate mental health topics into newsletters, and review key policies to further embed wellbeing into the workplace.
